Talk Show Gabber Steps In It

From ESPN:

"Giants manager Felipe Alou called a one-week suspension given to a radio host for making racial remarks about the team's Latino players "a slap on the hand" and said he wouldn't accept an apology from Larry Krueger [talk show host]."

As regular readers of this blog know, I am a baseball fan. This guy apparently went off on the San Francisco Giants and its "brain-dead Caribbean hitters hacking at slop nightly." I'm not sure why he singled out the Latin players since it's a criticism that could be leveled at a whole bunch of different baseball players (see Kevin Millar).

He singled out the Caribbean players because in those countries there is often an emphasis on an attacking style of hitting. It is not perjorative to point out that one comes from the school of thought that emphasizes swinging away over a more controled patient approach. See my blog for additional comments on this controvery. http://ugleenakedguy.blogspot.com

Right, right. The maxim is "you can't walk away your way off the island." (The island being Hispaniola.)

That doesn't make the comment any less brain-dead. Reducing the Jints' problems to Hispanic players' reluctance to work the count requires a degree of ethnocentrism that most thinking people rightly regard as offensive.
